 If you’re looking for a simple outdoor project that keeps little ones happily busy, a DIY mud kitchen is such a lovely idea. We put this together last year as a birthday gift for our daughter. It was surprisingly easy and has been very well used! Made from unused pallets, it’s budget-friendly, sustainable, and perfect for messy, imaginative summer play. It also doubles as a brilliant setup for an outdoor kids birthday, giving children a fun, hands-on activity to enjoy together in the garden. We’ve had lots of people asking about how we did this - unfortunately we never documented the process in photos as we weren’t intending to share, but we’ve written it below which hopefully will give people a better idea of the steps we used. 1. Break Down & Prep PalletsTake apart 2–3 pallets and sand all pieces well, focussing on corners (important for little hands). Keep one larger, heavier, sections intact for the base if possible. We also used a large partially intact piece for the back. 2. Build the Base/SidesDivide the sturdiest pallet into two equal sections. One will be the base whilst the other should be split again to form the sides. Stack and screw these sections together then attach the other pallet to the back. Measure a gap underneath for storage (pots, trays, muddy treasures), and make sure your countertop will be a suitable height for your toddler. 3. Add the WorktopLay two long pieces of wood from one wall to the other. This will support for your worktop. Then, use flat pallet boards to create a smooth top on top. Cut a hole and drop in a metal bowl for the sink (measure carefully first - any bowl will do but preferably it will be one with a ‘lip’ so it fits nicely in place.) 4. Create the Backboard and ShelvesAdd a simple shelf or two and hooks for utensils (wooden spoons, ladles, etc.). We used an extra broken piece of wood (sanded and painted black) for the sign. Then we added a cupboard for ascetics but this isn’t necessary for the integrity of the structure. 5. Paint & Finish (the fun bit)Paint in your little one’s favourite color!  This time last year we were living a very calm and simple life in a beautiful and peaceful Myanmar - 2021 has brought an immeasurable amount of changes.
In February the Burmese government were taken down by corrupt military officials in a coup d'etat. A plan to hurriedly resettle in the UK was quickly put together, and after a torturous couple of months we finally flew home in April. After staying in Wales for a few months with family, teaching at our schools in Myanmar remotely, we were finally able to move to a home in Northamptonshire, England where we now live and teach. Throughout the year, I continued illustrating and creating products on Zazzle. Our little store has thrived through all these challenging transitions, and I have loved watching each milestone.
